Update: You can block yourself from ever seeing facebook again by editing your /etc/hosts file and adding a series of URL’s to it. Here’s how.
I just committed Facebook Suicide.
Sadly, I won’t know if it was successful for two weeks because that’s the “cooling off period” that FB insists on. If I log in to Facebook via any means at all, I’ll be resurrected. This means if I visit a site that I’ve used FBConnect on and it uses that ID to give me access (to that non-FB site), I’ll be re-instated. It’s just so slippery and weird.
I love social media but Facebook is really creeping me out now and it’s time to leave.
Here’s my suicide note to my FB “friends”:
Hey there Facebook Peeps.
I’ve attempted this almost as many times as I’ve attempted to quit smoking, but after I searched for a clean and easy way to completely eradicate FB from my life and found that FaceBook has been systematically hunting down and killing sites that help you leave, I just think it’s time to move on.
I’ve found a few cool new apps like Path (http://www.path.com) and I’m using Instagram still (http://instagram.com) as well as blogging on my site (which is in dire need of a facelift) (http://lindsaydigital.com).
I love you all and I look forward to seeing you, my “friends”, in the real world soon. Let’s have dinner, OK?
