Dorking around in Maya today

I should be working on the Climate Change exhibit today, but after discussing a role-playing game concept with my buddy Erik, I got all inspired to work on a concept piece instead.  This is the ancestral home of the Chay-Nee People of the Apocalypse.

Modeled in Silo3D, textured and rendered in Maya, tweaked in Photoshop.

It’s been suggested that I include the text of this character concept so here ya go!

Kierie
She is a slight girl in her early twenties.  Some Caucasian and Asian mixed with Pacific Islander and South American Native.  Above average intelligence and an almost spooky way with animals – they trust her.  Extremely lithe and physically fit but not very big, she sprint and jump out of harms way instead of bashing through it.
She comes from a bunker in the desert where her stratospherically wealthy ancestors, the Chay-Nee, stockpiled goods and renewable technologies against what they knew was coming.  She doesn’t know this, but while they were not the architects of the apocalypse, they share a large amount of the blame for it.
The roof of this bunker has been open to the sky for the past 100 years since the automatic systems kicked on and let the People out.  Until this “Awakening” moment, the People had been fed and housed by an automatic system of hydroponics and hidden vats of genetically modified growing muscle tissue.  One year after the roof opened, all the systems shut down, throwing the People into a long period of chaos and then finally tribalism.  They use the remnants of technology of the past in shamanistic ritual and have a meme of a “final use of technology” that will be used at the end of times.
She is armed.  All of the People are hunters and farmers.  Her weapons of choice are two short machete’s that she wear on the outside of each thigh.
While out hunting, a band of nomadic raiders found her hunting party.  Seven of the People against thirty raiders, they killed the raiders and hung their carcasses in a circle around their camp.  That night, while they slept, a thundering wind and bright lights came from the darkness.  Everyone was killed but Kierie.  She awakes in a strange forest, completely alone and has been wandering and hunting for two months – trying to find her way back to the Bunker.

That’s wicked cool. So is this just a side project for fun, or something more serious?

Thanks! I really should have been working on the Aquarium gig, but I just got carried away. Hey. It’s a Sunday!

This is just an RPG that my buddy Erik and I are doing over email – something to keep the creativity juices flowin’.

Oh man that’s so cool. It’s really crucial for creative people to continue to explore these realms of thought when they’re pressed with assignments and/or jobs in a less-creative arena. I do a lot of art at school to help me keep my sanity- all of my classes involve calculus-based physics, vector calculus, or tough inorganic chemistry. Creature design and environment rendering keep me alive through all that.

Sounds like a blast! I’m reminded of MIrror’s Edge, Earthdawn, Fallout, and Beyond Good & Evil, all at the same time.

This is really cool. It looks much better than what I wasted my weekend on. After I saw you on Saturday I started messing around with match moving as soon as I got home. Long story short (trust me, I deleted like 3 paragraphs of rambling), all I managed was a sphere, and it looks crappy…but it was a first attempt so I don’t feel so bad. Back to your project;
I really like the angle of the rendered shots, and the moon lighting is very convincing. The one thing that catches my eye is in the main shot, where the terrain has a more video-game texture feel to it, and the moon looks to real for the rest of the environment. It still looks awesome though, so you go that going for ya. I’m looking forward to seeing some character modeling eventually. Looks like a fun game (if it goes that direction)… what kind of format would it be? First-Person Shooter (with machetes)?…. RTS?

Hey Jim,

Actually, that’s just me sketching in 3D. It will most likely stay rough like that for the whole RPG, which is what this is. My buddy Erik is playing GM and I’m his hapless player, wandering through the twisted corridors of his imagination. We play over email and through a Tumblr site and as he comes up with new scenarios, I draw, model, or sketch them. It’s a creativity exercise for both of us. Just keeping our brains lubricated, ya know?

Chay-Nee – clever. Invoking the name of the antichrist. Spence. This is decidedly cool – I really dig the concepts you are rolling with here and really like the writing style as well – excellent work. This reminds me of the Fifth Sacred Thing by Starhawk. Are you still throwing this one around?

We took a break because we both got so busy, but I think I want to start it up again in the next few weeks. Pretty cool way of massaging the creativity.

:s.
