Filed under: Art — spence @ 6:52 pm

just stumbling along tonight - found this incredible art - Not sure if this is acrylic?  Oils?  Very cool.

UPDATE: This is the work of Travis Louie and according to my buddy Air, it’s Acrylics.

iPhone apps - RADIUS

Filed under: Tech, Art, games — spence @ 4:14 pm

So far, the apps I’ve seen for the iPhone have been kinda cute or mildly helpful, but this game is just so amazingly cool, both in its clever gameplay design and in its simple yet beautiful graphic style.  I absolutely love this thing.  Damn you Pattern Making Co. for making such a delicious and addictive game!

Buy it on iTunes.

Drilling off my coast

Filed under: Tech, politics, green — spence @ 8:49 am

Yes, I said MY coast.
I read recently that 51% of Californians were in favor of offshore oil drilling.  I think this is true because they’ve been given two choices:

  • Drill
  • Don’t Drill

Seeing that developing the infrastructure to remove the oil would take ~15 years and the resultant boon of black stuff would power the US for ~2 months at out current rate of consumption, I have a few more options:

  • Remove all State and Federal incentives and subsidies from energy and auto industries.
  • Require that all vehicles sold in the US meet a requirement of 125 Mpg - in three years.
  • Take back $1 leases from the petrochemical companies and (where applicable) build wind farms on those leases.
  • Here in California, we live on the “Ring of Fire” - How about some Geo-Thermal?

If you want to drill off of the California Coast, drill foundations for wind turbines.

wires

Filed under: Tech, Art — spence @ 5:43 pm

The current project is creating a graphic for a local telecom company so they can wrap their van in it.  “Wrapping” a vehicle involves making a giNORMous image and then printing in on sticky-backed vinyl and applying it to the entire vehicle.  I’m wrapping a 20 foot van.  Never rendered something this huge before, I have a feeling I’m going to need to render segments out and then composite them in Photoshop.

Update: July 25th

Lot’s of work back and forth with the client - I think we have an accord!  This now gets rendered out in parts and assembled for printing.

Here’s a test:

Update for July 19th - Fiber connectors and wires plus some more paneling:

Renewable Energy - Where’s our priorities?

Filed under: Tech, politics, green — spence @ 8:33 am

The DOE has requested $1.24 Billion in research and development funds for renewable energy in 2008. We spent $137.6 Billion last year in Iraq.

Math Club: 137.6 / 365 = .3769 X 7 = $2.63 Billion

We spend twice the Annual Federal Renewable Energy Budget in one week in Iraq - securing non-renewable resources.

How fracked up is that?

Playground Safety - whatever…

Filed under: Random, politics — spence @ 10:30 am

A recent article in the Washington Post regarding the game of tag on the playground…

{rant}

I am so done with America dumbing down and softening our society. Playgrounds; great analogies for what’s happening in the rest of the country; look like this now when they should look like this. Go to any other country in the world (except Canada) and you’ll find kids playing on shit that could kill them if they messed up. They learn not to mess up - “Damn dude! Look what happened to Timmy..”. It’s part of growing up. We dull the edges of society so much that we’re becoming stupid and dull and unable to care for ourselves. It makes me nuts.

If there’s a problem with bullying on the playground, then have some adults out there helping with the communication problems - not just standing there gossiping while Billy repeatedly pounds Edwin’s head into the soft rounded edge of the FunSlide™, but actively engaging the kids and helping them solve differences.

more Eyes

I built this cool iris thing for a robot a few months ago and I was just sitting here, looking at the iris, and then looking at the Kenna eye picture… then back at the iris…

Macro Eyeball

Filed under: Art — spence @ 10:53 am

I’ve been messing around with the extension tubes I bought for the 60mm Macro lens. It’s amazing how close you can get.

I think I want to do a portrait of all of our eyes together - the dogs too.

Here’s the Lovely Kenna Lindsay:
